Caspa - Riot Powder

Stomp da Roach

The Bloody Beetroots kill this remix of Wu Tang alumni U-God feat one of my favourite MC's of all time the GZA. The Beetroots are more known for their sawtooth distortion heavy electro, but their last 2 hip hop offerings have nailed it for me...gritty...cop this.

RSD - Good Energy

RSD just released a collection of his singles from over the years aptly titled "Good Energy".

I personally hold his production at the echelon of the genre, & can say with confidence that it was Rob Smith aka RSD that solidified my thirst for Dubstep in the first place.

Rob's been at the centre of Bristol's Sound System culture since 1987, originally producing alongside Ray Smith as the hugely influential Smith & Mighty, who can be held in regard as the precursor to a long line of Bristolian legends stretching from Massive Attack to the Full Cycle crew.

RSD is the master of the double time shuffle, and is one of the few artists out there keeping the genre rooted in Dub.

Big ups to that!

Here is one of his older tunes...a classic.

RSD - Pretty Bright Light

Grab the full release @ Boomkat

Tracklist
1. RSD - Forward Youth
2. RSD - Green Hill

6. RSD - Love Of Jah Light
7. RSD - Koto
8. RSD - Corner Dub (Blue & Red Mix)
9. RSD - Speeka Box

11. RSD - Jah Way

Joker Remixes SMD

I got this track a few days ago...and i gotta say I slept on it.
I was a bit put off by the vocal and the big room electro feel...however I love Joker.
Thanks to a tip from Donna Dada I revisited the tune, & upon further listening...I am a believer.
It drops heavy...with an uplifting female vocal, an emaculate purple synth bass, & an old school electro break...this track can do no wrong in da club...unless your playing to a room of blokes that is.

Turn it up!

Simian Mobile Disco feat. Beth Ditto - Cruel Intentions (Joker Remix)

Sabbo Yo!

Sabbo hails from Tel Aviv, Israel.

His productions bridge the gap between Roots Reggae, Dancehall, Dubstep, Cumbia, Hip Hop, and beyond... His myspace headline reads, "Bouncehall Music"...which seems to nail it more precisely.

He is a contributor to the Mad Decent Blog, and runs his own site as well - Noiz In Zion, where you can cop tonnes of his music, and other acts that he is up on.

Here are some of his tunes I've been Rinsing as of late...

Laroz - Reparation (Sabbo Remix)

Sabbo feat. Little X - Far to Go

Ghislain Poirier feat. MC Zulu - Go Ballistic (Sabbo Remix)

Bruno Changkye - Trainwreckin' Mix

I am not alone when I say that Bruno Changkye is one of the raddest dudes/ most talented DJ's in the city of Calgary. He is consistently putting out some of the most refreshing mixtapes around, & has the ability to maintain a groove while transitioning over multiple styles/bpms in any given set.
He will be joining us on the opening night of our new Friday Night Weekly - Modern Math, that starts on October 9 at Lord Nelsons Bar.

His latest mix has been on repeat for us as of late.
It deftly runs the gamut from Dubstep to Rap, DnB & Wompy Bass Hop, to Rare Groove & Disco then back again. All the while being peppered with Bruno's taylor made turntablism techniques.

I always give Bruno a hard time for not having an online presence-ie no myspace etc...so if you want to contact the man...hit him up on email -
bcmediaimage@hotmail.com

Cop this mix...and come catch Bruno kill it on Oct.9.

Kid Koala is the Slew...

Kid Koala has teamed up with former member(s) of the band Wolfmother to create the new Hip Hop hybrid band The Slew. They are giving away their new album named, "100%" for free, and I must say its worth all the hard drive space and more.
The beats are a nice and rough departure from some of his past releases- with some pretty rocking licks, and of course Kid Koala's butter cream cuts, & ever clever sample usage....there's even a lil' wonk to some of the tunes.

Download : Kid Koala - The Slew

Catch them in a town near you this fall...

Night Slugs Dubplates Mix 2009/ Night Slugs ep

Viva Night Slugs!  L-Vis 1990, Bok Bok, Country Cousinz, Egyptrixx and the rest of the Night Slugs affiliates have worked tirelessly over the last year and a bit to change the way we appreciate bass music.  The gaps between dubstep, bassline, house and funky are now effectively bridged:  Introducing L-Vis 1990 and Bok Bok's  Night Slugs Dubplates Mix 2009, published on Bok Bok's blog Lower End Spasm.  I assume the mix is celebrating todays release of the Night Slugs ep on Dress 2 Sweat.  Play it loud and disturb the neighbors.

New Forms Festival

The Saturday night line up for Vancouver's New Forms Festival is so appealing, I can't sleep on it.  Donna Dada,  Thief and myself are making a whirlwind road trip to Van this weekend to indulge in some low end frequencies at NFF, the amazing multi-media festival dedicated to promoting new media art, music, film and performance.  Michael Red of Vancouver's Lighta! Sound has assembled the likes of N-Type, Eskmo and Kush Arora to drop some serious bass on Saturday nights festivities.  Krista Lomax is providing visuals at the party.  Her demo is mind expanding.  Check out the full Saturday night lineup here.

Here is a selection from Michael Red to tide you over until the fest.  West Coast dwellers; if you are unfamiliar with Michael Red, do yourself a favor and catch one of his sets.  His early morning Shambhala 2008 performance still stands out in my mind as one of the best I have seen.

Four Sightings

My good friend Sleepyhead over at Midnight Social, just tagged Sandro and myself in a post featuring this trailer.
Yeah we are UFO nerds...and yeah I've seen four this year...so what.
This movie looks absolutely bonkers...
Watch the skies friends...and watch this movie when it drops!

Ganja White Knight

Ganja White Knight is 3 young producers hailing from somewhere in Belgium. R-One, Lebelge Electrod, & BambY just landed on my radar thanks to a tip from my main man Rizzo.

I expect to be hearing a lot more from these guys...their sound is ultra original with a format of dubstep that I've yet to encounter.

Their new ep titled "Gayfish" just dropped, cop it at Juno.

I've chosen to feature a song of their's called "Many Voices". This track feels like 4 tunes in one.
A dark and ambient intro leads into a serious half tempo wobble banger, that breaks down (huge), and builds up into a new and chaotic monster of a tune.

I usually don't like tracks that are super crazy and schizophrenic...but the creative approach makes this a worth while listen.
Watch out soundboys...this is a Killer.

Geiom's Going Places

Just having a glance through some playlists, I just stumbled on a few tracks that have slipped my memory over the past little while. Geiom, off the the Berkane Sol label, produces some realllly nice shuffly dubstep, it's fairly light and easy to listen to. But it GOES PLACES!!! My favorite. Takes you on a journey, every track has a story to tell. He just realeased the Cave Rave/Sirius Star single. Half steppy other half housey! How nice!

Anyways, here are a couple of his older chunes that I'm really feeling:

Geiom - Everlasting
Geiom - Safety Patterns

Mental Picture(s)

Here are 2 older tracks produced by a couple mates from across the pond, SebastiAn , & Bandit.

Both of these artist are more known for their epic electro meet stadium metal sound...but deliver the goods on these low motion bombs.

The SebastiAn tune is from 2005, yet sounds like a little bit of everything good that is coming out at the moment.

SebastiAn - Hal

Bandit keeps it on a more 4/4, low motion disco turn purple sounding synth bass.

Imagine Justice meets Joker.

Better yet...imagine a mid 90's Capcom video game ending track...
You've just beat Street Fighter 2 with Ken. After slaying your enemies you've decided to take a cruise in the countryside in your brand new cherry red corvette convertible. Joining you in shotgun your blond haired knockout of a digital girlfriend. Your both wearing ray bans, & Plastic 101 is on the radio as you drive off into the sunset.

Bandit - Plastic 101

The Message is Love

Continuing on my Dancehall tip... I have a gem of a remix for you all..."The Message is Love" is a big tropical tune of the moment. Its by Silverlink ft. Badness & Jammer, and has already be reworked by artists including L-Vis 1990, Starkey, & Mumdance. You can grab the original at Boomkat.

The Heatwave are giving away their version for free...I highly recommend getting while you can...its already in my playlist.

Silverlink ft. Badness & Jammer - The Message is Love (The Heatwave Remix)

Onto another message of love....I was reading an interview with Bassnectar over at the Bass Music Blog...where I found this nice quote that seemed fitting for this post.

Bass Music
- What do you know now that you wish you had known when you started out?
Bassnectar - That none of this matters, that life flies by faster than i ever imagined, that learning to enjoy moments instead of stressing out is a really good thing.

Wise words by one of my favourite dudes.

Si Begg Thunk It

Si Begg is an anomaly...the guy has been around forever, has a production value comparable to the best of em...and yet remains relatively unknown to most.
His sound combines elements of Experminetal/Wonky Techno, Dubstep, Downtempo, Breakbeat, Ambient, Drum and Bass, Glitch, Turntablism and Jazz.
He is such a Jedi of sound that he gives away his choice sample packs for free...grab em here!

He is also kind enough to be offering his new ep the 24bit Error Collection for free dl.

If you would like to purchase the "beautifully crafted box set", do so here.

My favourite tune in the package is an OG flavoured digital dancehall stomper, by the name of, I Thunk Therfore I am.

BunZer0- Freshness Provider

My old roomie, Fluxo, introduced me to BunZer0 and the FOB show.  Bun produces an amazing 2 hour mix every Thursday for SUB FM.  His track list is something to  envy.  The top producers in the world send BunZer0 their cuts to be rinsed on the live show.   Most tracks are VIP's or unreleased.  The show is a great indicator of the current state of dubstep, covering techno dubstep, soulful purple wow sounds and straight forward wobblers.  BunZer0's vibrant personality shines through on his broadcasts- he hypes the selections with a thick Belgium accent and broken Patwa.  BunZer0 produces some sick dubs as well.  Check out his work with Belgium's Sub Nerds.

Hit up the link below to hear Bun's last show.  Find archived shows on his blog.  Listen to BunZer0 live every Thursday on  SUB FM.

Radikal Guru- Strong Dub

This a a pretty laid back dub chune from Radikal Guru, a Polish born producer and DJ who is currently based out of Cork, Ireland.

Dub Conscious

So we just had the pleasure of being host to a new friend and very respected selecta from out east, (soon to be over here in the west!!) Dj Dubconscious (Jake) slays it! A part of the well known Dubslingers crew from out in the Toronto area this young guy knows his riddim's. He plays everything in the dubby/bassy realm, and plays it well. I was lucky enough to listen in on an exclusive mixdown in the good ol' home studio. Siiiick little collection of some fine reggae 45's! Anyways now for the good's, he's dropped off a couple mixtures, one is his new reggae mix titled "The Upset", only thing I'm upset about is that I didn't have this mix at the beginning of the summer, but throw it in. Close your eyes. Twist one up, and you'll have summer all year round. Next up is a nice little exclusive mix that he did for a friend's wedding, a bit more on the low energy side but sure to rock you left and right. Enjoy! I did.
