Mr Gasparov - Maseeve (New Tune)

Mr Gasparov rolls deep with my BCN fam, and has quickly become one of my favorite artists on the globe...his tune 1975 on Steak House Records topped my best of 2009 list this year, and he just launched his own blog that I'm really liking as of late.

Maseeve is his latest and last tune of 2009..and its spectacular...can't wait for more of this style to emerge in the new year.

If you like what you hear... show him some love on soundcloud or over at his site.

Doubt (Ramadanman Refix)

Great indie-step remix of Delphic by one of my favourite producers as of late Ramadanman. Loving the twisted reworkings he applies to the original synth lines...

Thanks to Hot Biscuits for posting this.

Drop the Lime @ The Republik w/ Mr. Geography

What can you say about Luca "Drop the Lime" Venezia that hasn't already been documented? He makes crazy left field bass music and sings like an angel. He runs the Trouble & Bass label in NYC... he's made cuts for Tigerbeat6, Planet Mu and Institubes. If XLR8R's 2008 artist of the year is in your neck of the woods, bass devastation is sure to follow.

Drop the Lime is playing the newly re-opened Republik Nightclub in Calgary on December 27th, TRO's Mr. Geography is opening, alongside Noah York City.

Check the Facebook event. See you pon de floor. Gonna be a banga!

Tiger + Crane

As 2010 draws near, I find myself feeling more and more nostalgic of the days gone past.

I'm not gonna bore you with my old man "back in the day" speech...
I just want to show some love to the sounds that catalyzed my life as a dj, producer, and connoisseur a' la beats.

"I be swingin' swords strictly based on keyboards."

No sound to this day has affected me as much as the first time I heard the Wu...and as we stand on the precipice of an uncertain yet brave new world...I can state the following with complete certainty...

As long as music is being made on planet earth...there will never be another Wu Tang Clan.

"Light is provided through sparks of energy
from the mind that travels in rhyme form
Givin sight to the blind
The dumb are mostly intrigued by the drum
Death only one can save self from
This relentless attack of the track spares none"

Si Begg - Revelation (Free Tunes)

Si Begg is giving away 4 tunes on his website as an early Christmas gifts to all us bass heads...he does this every few months...which is really nice of him, because he is a bomb producer.

Here's my pick of the four..

Grab all of them here.

MC's Can Kiss (Starkey Remix)

Super tight remix by Philly's finest, Starkey...not a fan of the original by Uffie...but Stark bot takes the original and annihilates it with some amazing synth lines, glitch effects, and crunk step beats...this is some my favourite work by Starkey to date...full release in January on Ed Banger.

Michael Red this Friday

We are super excited to have the founding member of Lighta! on the decks this week @ Modern Math.

Michael Red aka Souns has been crushing soundboys in Vancouver since 1998...and has played a major role in establishing the cities bass music, dubstep, grime and dancehall scenes on an international level.

He has shared the stage with artists including Kode 9, The Bug, and Joker to name but a few.
Recently quoted as 'the best selector in Canada" by our hombre Max Ulis...which is saying a lot...cause Max be a critical bro...and rightfully so.

One of mRed's original tunes is featured in this video below.

Our NYE bash has just been announced as well...check the event listing for details.

Midnight Social Part Deux

My hombre Sleepyhead over at the Midnight Social Club invited me down to Lethbridge this weekend to play a jam he is putting on with some friends of his.
MSC is easily one of the best and most personal music blogs on the interweb...
Sleepyhead has a writing style all his own, and an impeccable taste in just about every genre of relevance...I highly recommend checking this blog.

Watch out for some big new Sleepyhead productions..and possible collaborations with yours truly and company in the coming year.

If you happen to be in the bridge this weekend...come say hi at the Henotic Lounge...I'll be rinsing bangers on all the university heads.

Until then here is a tune by Harmonic 313 aka Mark Pritchard...inspired by the mysterious lights spotted over Norway yesterday....
Which I happen to believe is an intergalactic space portal to/from another dimension...

DL - Harmonic 313 - The Returners

Just saying.

We <3 Brackles...

Brackles
has been one of the most original and exciting new artists to emerge from the UK underground in 2009...he was right near the top of our "best of 2009" list...and if his progression continues as it has...2010 promises to be his for the taking.

His productions meet somewhere between the realms of broken beat, 2 step, dubstep, house, and electro...making his hybrid sound a perfect fit for the modern dj who wants a little bit of everything in his or her sets.
Both playable in the big room or the chill out lounge...Brackles never disappoints...
From what we hear, his live djing skills are top notch as well...here's hoping he can make an appearance in Calgary this coming year.

A Day in the Life (Unknown Mix)

This is hands down the best remix of the Beatles I have ever heard. EVER!
I have to say that I usually... as in 99.99 percent of the time hate it when modern producers sample or remix classic rock tunes to make a quick hit track...however that is not the case here..

This remix is so beautiful its insane.

Posted by Sei A on soundcloud...its called the "unknown mix".. it sounds suspiciously similar to Burial's productions...could it be??? I really don't know...regardless it is a masterpiece.

But please do yourself a favour and listen to this..if your like me...listen to it over and over and over...this is a one of a kind!

200th Post = The Rinse Out Best of 2009

Its that time of year again...when all the music media outlets put together their best of lists for the year past...
So we figured why not make our 200th post on TRO a mega post complete with all our favourite jams and artists of the year.

2009 was a big year for underground music. It saw the trends of the past 3 years fade away...and make way for a new forward thinking sound set to lead us into the next decade of electronic music.
For us this new sound represents quality not quantity...creativity over plagiarism...and an open minded approach to both music production and listening that was lacking in recent years.

So with our 2009 wrap up lists...we have selected not just our favourite tunes...but the artists, production techniques, and labels behind them.

This music we have selected is simply stuff that we really liked this year-whether it be a lot of the tracks that we played out this year, artists that inspire our own productions, or a glimpse into what we would like to see more of in 2010...

Artist of the Year - Scuba
With his move to Berlin earlier this year...Scuba's sound took on a cross pollination of techno and dubstep that was definitely required in order for both genres to evolve, branch out and expand into new frontiers of listenership...not only did he himself release several red hot eps, and remixes...but his imprint Hotflush continued to drop quality releases including undoubtedly one of the most memorable and refreshing tracks of not only the year but of the whole decade with, Joy Orbison's Hyph Mngo...which you can guarantee made just about everyones "best of" list for this year.

DL - Scuba - Aesaunic

Nosaj Thing @ the Hifi Club

Nosaj Thing has been one of the most publicized underground artists of 2009. With the release of his debut album Drift receiving critical acclaim across the board, and his music finding regular airplay on BBC Radio 1 and Los Angeles' KCRW...this has been a extremely busy year for the Los Angeles native to say the least.

Even though this event finds itself on NYE eve....this show could go down as one of the most refreshing shows of 2009, and the perfect jumpoff to what promises to be the most revolutionary year in Calgary's local music scene to date.

Rumor has it he may even be doing an instore info session here @ Giant 45...not something you will want to miss if your a part of cowtowns burgeoning beat maker community.

DL - Nosaj Thing - Lords

DL - Nosaj Thing - Fog

Both tracks taken from Nosaj Thing's album Drift...purchase the full length here.

The Rinse Out's own, Lorne B is opening things up...so get there early to catch one of our finest in the mix.
